This what I have heard--loads of aquanet, teasing, more teasing, loads more of aquanet, and the occasional dryer and crimping.

Okay, here's what I wrote her. Like I said, its a long version of what Ginger said.

First things first, it really helps to have some kind of layering in your hair (shorter on top), but you can still work it without.

Here's what I have come to find is the best way to make your hair biggest:

---You will need: Hairspray (we goths love Aquanet), crimping iron, fine toothed comb or teasing comb, about 20 to 30 minutes.

-Start with hair you washed yesterday. If you must wash it today, make sure you don't condition it and it is completely dry before you start.

-Take your Aquanet and spray all over your hair. Before it dries, comb it through your hair. Really make sure its throughout your hair and there are no crunch parts.

-If you have fringe, decide if you want to keep it down or not (I keep mine down).

-Warm up your crimping iron to high (you might have to find one at a beauty supply store or online). Take chunks of hair and crimp it all around your head, paying special attention to the roots.

-Once you've crimped, use your fingers to run through the hair and "fluff" it up at a bit to break up the chunks you've made using the crimping iron.

-Now comes the fun part. Take your finetoothed comb (or teasing comb) and pick up a section of hair. Hold the hair by the end and drag your comb all the way to the root. Do this a few times for each section.

-Now you have a head filled with fuzzy rats nests. Go all around your head and backcomb randomly but thoroughly. This will make your little rat's nests meld together so you have one big rat's nest! Back comb anywhere that needs some fluffing.

-Take your Aquanet, bend over and spray in a sweeping motion (that will help you use the hairspray propellant to keep your hair up). Keep the can about a foot away from your hair). Keep bent over until the spray dries.

-Stand up (slowly!) and inspect. If there are parts that need more floof, backcomb and hairspray more. Its also helpful to use your fingers to fluff it up using an outward and upward pulling motion.

-Okay, now it looks perfect. Spray the sucker down and you're ready to go!

^At least you can grow yours out and it will be prime for this! Butt-length hair (that has been meticulously conditioned) does not take well to teasing. :(

There are times when I really miss my big hair and the ritual of backcombing. It was so well trained in the end that I had no need of hairspray. The downside was that I quite often cut my fingers open on it whistle

Punkrockdomestics has a lot of tutorials on teasing hair.

Also, if you want hair like this you're prolly going to need a "rat", which you can either buy or make at home pretty easy Smile

    My routine for big hair.

Wake up. Look in mirror to suss out starting point. Flip hair upside down, rough up with hands, spray with hairspray. Pull up any pieces that look flat. Done.

Wet hair. Flip hair upside down, slightly dry with towel. Let air dry, suss out situation. Pull up any pieces that look flat. Spray with hairspray.

My hair loves to defy gravity. The other day I picked up my friend with sopping wet hair, and he balked and asked me why my hair was flat. When I explained it was just wet, he said, Oh good, it doesnt suit you. It stuck straight up by the end of the day.

I had long, straight, unlayered hair when I first started making mine submit to my will! You just have to keep at it - hanging over the end of the bed works well when blowdrying your hair and then just blitz it with lots and lots of wax and hairspray! Looks like total crap the next morning but honestly does work at the time grin
