 | Subject: RIP Dr. John Weinkein Thu Apr 02, 2009 1:02 pm | |
| A week ago the chair of my university's art department died. He had been suddenly diagnosed with late stage lung cancer. It had already spread to his limbs, so the chance of survival was slim. In just 2 months John went from being the vital, energetic man who I would see at 11:30 in class and then run into again at noon in the gym. He was a runner, a scholar and a fighter. He devoted his life to Native American art. His work played a part in elevating the work of indigenous peoples from the realm of roadside kitch or socialogical study to the level of fine or "high" art. He was honored with a burial on sacred Indian ground, unembalmed and wrapped in a white sheet. There was no casket, no priest, and no hearse. Just the scupture professor's mini-van with the seats but down to accodate the body. There was also no backhoe or grave digger. The hole was already there when the friends and loved ones arrived. After the Unitarian minister read some poetry John had selected, every person grabbed a shovel and began the work of burying him.
John Weinkein was my professor, my boss at my on campus job, but also my mentor and inspiration. He was a truly good man. I know it's easy to say that after a man dies, whether or not it was true, but really. Dr. Weinkein was a badass. The world is a sadder and suckier place without him. |

| Wow, he sounded like a truly great person to know. I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm also glad he was part of your life. And glad that he received the funeral he most likely would have wanted. The fact that attendees took part in caring for his body is a beautiful detail. |

| Yeah, that really moved me. As goths we've all thought about cemetaries and victorian mourning customs a bit. It's fascinating to see the totally different and wonderful ways that different people choose to make their final exits. |

| I'm so sorry for your loss Emma. He sounds like he was a great guy. I've seen somebody pass from lung cancer and the deterioration is quick and horrific. Much love to you kitten _________________ Well, the Devil he taught us how to rock and then he turned us loose |

| Everyone: Thank YOU!!!! I cried a bunch earlier, but now I'm doing better. Now I'm having my own, quiet personal wake at home. I have a glass of wine and (via internet) am surrounded by friends. If nothing else this has made me value my friends while they're alive. |
