4 rapists lashed by Somali Islamic court

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Four youths were publicly whipped in the Somali capital on Monday after an Islamist court convicted them of gang rape, in a demonstration of the U.N.-backed government's inability to administer justice in this chaotic nation.

Despite judge Abdul Haq's insistence that the punishment would deter other rapes, the lashing was administered through the clothes of the accused and did not break their skin. Two of the youths smiled and laughed as they were punished.

Most of the courts' judges have links to the Islamist insurgency fighting the government, and base their judgment on Shariah law. They are one of the few functioning institutions left in a shattered country that has lacked a working government since 1991. The courts formed the basis for a movement that took over the capital and much of the south in 2006 before being chased from power by Ethiopian troops supporting the virtually powerless central government. The Islamists immediately launched an Iraq-style insurgency, elements of which are still battling the government. Few people trust the predatory police force, going instead to the courts, which pass out judgments about once a month and can dispatch armed men to enforce them if necessary.

Haq designated four men to deliver the punishment immediately in front of a crowd of around 100 onlookers. "These boys deserve this punishment," said clan elder Suldan Ali. "This way other people will not do their evil deed."

Fifteen-year-old Abdulkhadir Mohamed said he admitted his guilt and welcomed the punishment. He and a friend stared at the ground as the punishment was delivered; the other two youths laughed.

Last October the courts sentenced a 13-year-old rape victim to death by stoning in the southern city of Kismayo in front of 1,000 spectators.

Rape Victim Stoned to Death in Somalia Was 13, U.N. Says

The United Nations said Tuesday that a Somali stoned to death by Islamist militants after she had been accused of adultery was a 13-year-old girl who had been raped while visiting her grandmother.

In the first such public killing by the militants in about two years, she was placed in a hole and stoned to death on Oct. 28 in a rebel-held port city, Kismayu, in front of a crowd, after local leaders said she was guilty under Shariah, the legal code of Islam based on the Koran.

Witnesses said at the time that the victim had been a 23-year-old woman.

“Reports indicate that she had been raped by three men while traveling on foot to visit her grandmother in the war-torn capital, Mogadishu,” Unicef, the United Nations children’s agency, said in a statement.

“Following the assault, she sought protection from the authorities, who then accused her of adultery and sentenced her to death,” Unicef added. “A child was victimized twice — first by the perpetrators of the rape and then by those responsible for administering justice.”

Unicef said the episode highlighted the vulnerability of girls and women in Somalia, which has suffered under cycles of civil conflict for the past 17 years. In the latest cycle, Islamist rebels are fighting the government and their Ethiopian military backers.

Rebel spokesmen could not be reached immediately to respond to Unicef’s accusation.

The human rights group Amnesty International has identified the girl as Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow and said she was killed by 50 men who stoned her in a stadium in Kismayu in front of about 1,000 spectators.

Her father and other sources were quoted by Amnesty International as saying that she had been raped by three men.

When the family tried to report the rape to the Shabab militia that controls Kismayu, the girl was accused of adultery and was detained. None of the men she accused of rape have been arrested.

The world makes NO sense to me. They give admitted rapists "gentle" lashings that don't even break the skin as their punishment, but kill a rape victim for being raped.

I'd add more to that if I could but you summed up my thought perfectly.

If you ever had a wish to build a time machine, and take a look at what the world was like 700 years ago, you wouldn't need to bother. You'd just have to by a plane ticket to a primarily Islamic country. Sadly that religion, which actually upheld the teachings of Aristotle and the philosophers of Greece and Rome, and inspired Christian Europe to evolve out of the Dark Ages, hit a wall in the 1300's. They're like cavemen with nuclear weapons at times, no order whatsoever, but the drive and determination to do anything....except adapt with the rest of the world.

Islam is a desert religion that has strict rules that punishes even victims. Just take Deuteronomy 22:23-24 where it commands that a woman who was raped (and happens to be betrothed) is to be stoned.
