PostSubject: Houston, Texas   Fri Mar 06, 2009 5:40 pm

Im making my way there shortly and since I have never been to the USA before I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice / tips on the way things are over there ie gun crime etc. I know im probably reading too much into this but being in a mixed race relationship would we be prime targets for racists? etc. I've heard that Texas can be quite a racist state - is that true? Forgive me if its wrong.

Im very much a worry wort, so please give me any information you can so I can calm my nerves.

    Many thanks!

You shouldn't have too much of a hard time unless you're in one of the smaller towns. My bf lived in Texas and I asked him the same exact thing because i've heard things like that too and I was afraid they'd try to do something to us. He says that the bigger cities are fine and that you shouldn't be discriminated against. Houston's a pretty decent place from what he's said. His ex wife was black and they lived in Texas for 3 years without any problems. There's actually a lot of interracial couples living in Texas these days Wink . Hope this helps dear.

I don't think you will have anything to worry about Vampira. Since this is a vacation I assume you are going to one of the bigger cities. So there would be no problem as Angel has already stated.

PostSubject: Re: Houston, Texas   Sun Mar 08, 2009 1:57 pm

this was already said in one way or another but as long as your in the city I doubt the mixed race relationship will be an issue because in the cities around here its really common...

Also, just on the gamer tip, A LOT of the games I'm sure you're a fan of were made in Houston (gears of war, for example) so if you want to see sights maybe the game places out there give tours meh I could give better advice on Dallas since I've been there but I'm sure Houston has a lot of things to go do, maybe even a zoo (the dallas zoo is pretty huge)... But yeah, theres not to much to worry about in the city.

Oh! I'm sure you wont be going into the inner INNER city (the ghetto) but Thats where the drugs and guns come into the picture, thought I'd throw that inthere since you asked about guns and what not.

I dont know where you'll be staying but a good rule of thumb is to knock out your shoes and stuff before putting them on just because it is texas and they have a lot of things that will bite you and no place can keep 100% of everything out grin

I think you'll have a great time regardless of what you actually do while your out there, I liked Texas when I was there and there's plenty to go and see even if you just drive around the big empty... I think the bigest problem you'll have is driving on the "wrong" side of the road (we drive on the right and all the drivers stuffs on the left)

I've bought the City Pass which is for everything around Houston Zoo, NASA museum etc. We've got everything planned during the nights time ie going to the WWE Fan Access on the Friday night (meeting all the wrestlers with V.I.P grin entree), then there's Hall of Fame (where the old wrestlers get an award for the achievements in WWE/WWF) and finally the grand daddy of them all Wrestlemania 25 on Sunday night.

Ugh, I aint looking forward to that one since we are in a guest house where we have our own living quarters ie bathroom/kitchen/living room etc.

Cheers for those Endless; I hear Houston is mighty big over there.

Worryeth not, fair vampira. Even in my smaller town I know... (counts on fingers) 6 mixed-race young couples. With the Mexican influx, indegenous population, and freed slaves from the confederate days (not to mention oil and Nasa, which have made this a tech and thus Asian-scientist-friendly place) we're actually a "Minority Majority" state now. My own university is 35% black.

So no- you've got NOTHING to worry about. There's the occasional jerk in any country, but don't mind them.

While in Houston, you'd be remiss if you did not check out the Rothko Chapel. It's a non-denominational modern art spiritual experience. I secretly kind of resent Rothko's art, but go anyway to decide for yourself. The paintings in it were originally intended for the Seagram building in NYC, but Rothko said something like f-this capitalist place and did his own thing.

My Houstonian boyfriend says that if you don't go to the space center you're crazy. I've never been, but the way he describes it, he's right.

Also, the botanical dome thingy- I think it's off a museum of natural science- they made a whole rainforest in a dome with butterflies EVERYWHERE. It's gorgeous!

Above all else, enjoy the currency exchange! When I went to England I cried whenever I switched from dollars to pounds. Oh, the things you can buy....

    Hey, thanks!

Pretty tired at the moment and trying to get used to the different time zone again.

Holiday was really something different. I couldnt believe how open plan Houston is, im so glad they had the metro there so we could get around as well as our faithful taxi driver Sam.

Wrestlemania, Fan Axxcess and the Hall of Fame was just AWESOME headbang
I lost my voice at the end of Wrestlemania, had a shouting competition with the woman who was cheering for HBK but The Undertaker won so she saw my victory dance.

I've got loads of pics and vids so I will show you sometime soon.
