Far from killing the mood, authorities argue the aim is to stop commuters missing their taxis.

Officials at Warrington Bank Quay Station agreed to a romance-free zone, which was suggested by the local chamber of commerce.

"They may seem frivolous, but there is a serious message underneath. They certainly make our station unique," Colin Daniels, chief executive of Warrington Chamber of Commerce said.

If lovers want to smooch, they have to do so in the designated kissing area situated nearby.

The directive has got tongues wagging at the station - but of course, only in the permissible way.

Ruth Hardman and her partner Alan Dawson were heading home to the Lake District.

"I was gob-smacked when I saw them. They should spend the money on something more worthwhile," Ms Hardman said.

Amy Swain who was travelling to Lancaster with her boyfriend Malcolm Kenny said she did not see the point in the no kissing sign: "I don't think it'll stop people."

Others however could see the funny side.

"[My partner's] car was parked beneath the kissing sign and I thought he'd put it up as a joke. It made me laugh," said Lynne Surgenor, from Glasgow.

John Finney, from St Helens, said: "Someone in an office somewhere must have a good sense of humour.

"We're law-abiding citizens, though, so of course we won't be breaking the rules."

Train passenger Jenna Seddon, 23, from Warrington, said she thought the signs were sweet.

"It's romantic and a bit of fun. It'll stop people from holding up the traffic as well."

This one rule that is ment to be broken!

As a regular train rider all I want to do is show a loving embrace to the love of my life whom I havent sene in a few weeks. Dear god, I really hope this doesnt go to any other train stations here; its total bull ****.

This wont stop people from kissing. Why dont they use there time to figure out ways on improving the town or stopping crime etc.

Yay! more unnecessary telling people what to do!

If people want to kiss and miss their trains thats their problem!

I am sure the train people don't get hassled about it joy killers!

    *shakes head*

It'll just make it harder to capture those last minute "Life & Time" moments with the camera.

PS... I don't see the point of it, of the being against people smootching! The Ban or having restricted areas.

    So...
What happens to those who disobey the sign?
    Slap on the wrist?
    Fine/ticket?
Banned from the train for that day, week, month, year, ever?
Lectured until long after your train departs?
    Jail?

    I mean seriously...
Setting up and actually regulating such a thing is more of a hassle and time consuming than just letting people go about their daily business.
Tough sh*t if they miss their train because they were too stupid or "involved in the moment" to realize "hey, the train isn't going to wait for one individual".
And if it's about money, about issuing refunds or whatever because "oh hey, we missed our train" then just set up a no refund policy or allow them to exchange them at the very worst.
    If it was me...
Person: I'm sorry, I seemed to have missed my train.
    Me: Okay...
Person: Could I get a refund?
    Me: I'm sorry, but no.
    Person: But...
Me: Look, dipsh*t, life doesn't revolve around you. You missed you're train? That's too bad, but it's not my fault... not the stations fault... not even the crew managing and operating the train's fault. It's yours. Should have factored whatever prevented you from making it on time into your itinerary and/or came sooner... or not even bothered coming in the first place.

I dunno, people can be stupid and pleasantries only allow them to continue to be stupid.
    Tough love = lesson learned.
    Hopefully.
