Headbangers told: Wear a neck brace or risk serious injury

12/18/2008 3:00 PM, Yahoo! Music

Medical experts in Australia have warned that headbanging is likely to be behind a silent epidemic of head- and neck-related injuries.

Dr. Andrew McIntosh, biomedical and injury expert at the University Of New South Wales, carried out research into headbanging, and published his findings in the British Medical Journal.

McIntosh issued a stark warning to music fans who headbang.

"We identified a definite risk of mild traumatic brain injury from headbanging," he said. "We would suggest a proper public health warning, as for smoking."

The report calls for fans to wear neck braces when headbanging in order to protect themselves from injury. McIntosh also recommended listening to less intense music, reports The Herald.

"Perhaps AC/DC should play something more appropriate, such as 'Moon River,'" he joked.

All I can think about is being at a concert and seeing a bunch of metalheads with neck braces. LOL

Here let me be the first to headbang to this article!

Man... now how long has AC/DC been around? Maybe they've just had an increase of reports of injury due to thoses about to Rock not actually ready to! RRRAAARR!!!!

I'm thinking AC/CD is a little mild compared to some. Fledglings! tongue

I've seen some serious headbanging in my time and even I do alot but my neck just gets used to it after awhile. Theres no need to warn anyone about it, just have to do it less often thats all...

You cant really headbang fast to AC/DC its only classic rock not metal....

Glad I'm not a metalhead. I tried headbanging once when I was younger just for the hell of it and I hurt my neck pretty bad. Never again. Besides....I think it's kind of trashy anyway... whistle

Never actually headbanged myself (I'm more of a pogo person) but I did become quite fascinated with a head banging gentleman at the COF gig because his very long hair just seemed to have a life of it's own

Dan said when we saw Danzig he could see my blonde head popping up above everyone else every few seconds(when I wasn't in the mosh pit).

All hail the only girl in the mosh pit! hail

As a midget I find that the ability to pogo is often the only way that I can actually see the band

It's hard to see anything when everyone aorund is so tall that it feels like you're the only short one in the room.

Laughing

Moshers have more fun and get to amazing heights! I do have to add that I have been a posh mosher and have drunk champagne in the "pit" before but I blame Lynne entirely for that!

If you hurt your neck headbanging, then I think it is about time you add a new move into your routine.
