Last weekend I went to Atlanta, Georgia to see the Bodies exhibit; I was expecting the place to smell like formaldehyde but there was no smell since the bodies were injected with a special plastic. The exhibit mostly showed how the muscles correlate to our movement, but it also showed how the major organs coordinate together. They also had the entire nervous system separated out from the body. Most interesting was the entire network of blood vessels that make up the body; I had never really appreciated how many vessels there are in the body--it looks like a net. There was also a fetal development display (all the way from a few weeks up until just about ready to be born), but just before you went into that section there was a sort of warning because of all the things on display, fetal development strikes a stronger chord for most people.
We also went to the Atlanta aquarium and the Diana exhibit (which I thought was trite because I never really cared for Diana, and it was annoying that people would crowd around a display). Even thought the aquarium was rather large, it didn't have quite the diversity of species like the Chattanooga one does; it was cute to see a couple of otters playing like cats. The main attraction at the Diana exhibit was her clothes, which I thought were for the most part ugly; her wedding gown was even uglier in person than in the photos.
Even though it wasn't really in our plans to visit The World of Coke, we went ahead and took the tour since it was right down the street from our hotel. I do warn you though, if you hate Coke, they practically have a monopoly in Atlanta.
If you want to eat at a revolving restaurant, there is the Sundial on top of the Westin hotel.
The only thing I brought back (other than my free glass bottle of Coke from the museum) was a spider mood ring. |
That sounds great apart from the Diana exhibit. _________________ Well, the Devil he taught us how to rock and then he turned us loose |

I went to the Bodies exhibit here in NYC a few years back. I absolutely loved it! I think my favorite part was the fetal development display, but like you say a lot of people have really strong feelings about that kind of stuff.
All of the bodies are from China, and there was some controversy about how the bodies were acquired for the exhibit. Some claim that the bodies are those of Chinese prisoners who were tortured and executed by the Chinese government.
The state of Hawaii has actually banned the exhibit, as has the country of Venezuela.
I think that this exhibit is such an important and educational one, it's a shame that some jusrisdictions feel strongly about exhibiting human bodies.

| Last night I got into a conversation with a cop about how weed isn't that bad, and how stoners are way better to deal with than drunk people. She was awesome. |

| I went to a super fantabulous Gothic event Downtown yesterday called The Scarlette Parlour. It was soooo much better than the Goth club nights I've been to recently. They had a burlesque dancer, a belly dancer, a Spanish guitarist and some pasty Vampiric-looking fellow singing Sinatra and Dean Martin songs (his *day* job is front man of a metal band ). He had floor length hair - no lie! I went with my bud Kiti who's gone back to being Goth (I guess it wasn't a phase after all) and her boyfriend. What was great about it was that it was a more intimate setting than the run of the mill goth nites at the clubs, and the crowd was just a tad bit older. And everyone was dressed in their Gothic finery. The hosts did a wonderful job of making everyone feel comfortable. Oh, there was a raffle too...and I won! . I got a basket full of goodies including a gift certificate to a French restaurant. Anyway, I had a great time. It soooo made up for all those lousy club nites my friend has dragged me to. LOL |

| A little while ago I spent a day doing studio work. At about 7pm, I realized that I hadn't eaten since the previous night, and needed to get some food into my body. Armed with no money, and just a metal bowl and brick of ramen, I set out to find hot water. I ran around my school for 45 minutes, desperately trying to find an unlocked studio where I could slip in and use someone's electric kettle, but to no avail.
Not even five minutes after I had given up gone back to working, Will and our friend Mari came by. They were trying to sneak into an exclusive art auction that was being held nearby (it cost $200 just to get in!!!) and get food.
As they tried to infiltrate through the front entrance in amateur fashion, I went on reconnaissance and eventually found an unguarded back door. Will and Mari (who were both decently-dressed) were turned away right off the bat, while I seamlessly slipped in while wearing a dye-stained t-shirt, hiking sandals, a raggedy old bohemian skirt, and carrying a huge backpack. The place was swarming with security guards to boot; I prided myself on having gotten in so easily. They were serving amazing Moroccan food for the event, and after chatting with rich people, drinking a bunch of mojitos, and scarfing down more than I had eaten in the span of the past week, I managed to run out with a bunch of food for Will and Mari.
I'm also quite proud of what I managed to get away with today. Will and I needed to walk from my apartment in Roxbury to a store in Allston to get some supplies for a project. Along the way we came to a screaming crowd and a mass of runners and realized that today was the Boston marathon (which pretty much cuts the city in half for the day.) After impatiently standing on the sidelines for 20 minutes (since we needed to cross the street being used for the marathon) I more or less said "f*ck it!" hopped the rope into the street, and ran with the marathon for about a half block before finding a break in the runners and bolting through to the other side of the street. I can now say I ran the Boston marathon... sort of. I was half expecting to have a cop harass me over it, but thankfully no one really bothered.
Moral of the story: You can get away with a lot if you act like you own the place/belong in the race/etc... even if it's clear that a sloppy art student doesn't have $200 to spend on auction tickets, or a girl in boots and a velvet dress clearly is not running in a marathon.

| I was going to club with a group of people in AC, and got all dressed up. Turns out one of the people in the group forgot her ID, so we had to have a copy of it faxed over to the head of the security, who really looked us out and walked us past the line to the second entrance. Once there I took the lead and told the people there that "Mike sent us over here", the security there and the door-girl took one look at me and the group and said; "Oh sorry sir, the VIP entrance is this side not this aisle". Then unclipped the rope, never checked us, never asked us to pay; and sent us to right where there was a surprise guest in the VIP section throwing a connecting party in the club.... P-Diddy. They stamped our group with the VIP stamp and let us get into it, and we ended going back and forth from the dance floor to the side booths to the upstairs party all night. There were DJ's, bands, models, dancers, so I totally schmoozed with everybody and was having Hennssey Black poured for me on the house left and right. People were stopping me for pics all over the place too, and DJ Vice was really friggin entertaining, and having a room through this lovely lady ready for me once we stumbled out of the club was really nice. |

| I went snorkeling with my uncle today. I saw all kinds of colorful tropical fish and even an eel! It was fantastic! The only bad thing is I managed to get sunburned on the back of my right arm. Have no idea how that happened since I practically bathed with SPF 85 several times. |

| Lots of stuff coming up... My sister-in-law visits on Monday! She's usually in New Zealand, at vet school, so this visit to the States is rare. She hasn't seen the house since '08 when she helped us move in. So, lots of cleaning and packing this weekend... Packing b/c on Tuesday morning (at dark o'clock a.m.) we're flying to California! We have friends getting married that Friday (jeez, a week from today), but we're going out there early. G wanted to make a little vacation out of it -- I told him I couldn't afford to do it 50/50; he said just cover meals, so I think it'll be all right. We fly into San Jose, visit the couple, head up to San Francisco, visit a couple museums, then meet a friend of mine for dinner (I haven't seen this friend in years; she used to live next door to me in CT). Then we drive down the coast, spend a day or 2 at Half Moon Bay's beaches. Thurs. we head to Pema Osel Ling, a Buddhist retreat center in Santa Cruz. The wedding will be here, and we're staying at a house on the grounds. I've made hair ornaments for the bride, and I'm doing her makeup the morning of the wedding. We fly back home on Saturday -- then, thankfully, no plans Sunday, and Monday off. Lots to plan for! I'm trying not to get too anxious about travel. If I put my mind on the beaches at the Bay, I'm OK. |
