Red feels like a good color for a remembrance day. White flowers remind me of a wedding or a funeral. Just a personal opinion on the matter.

I'm taking my bf out to dinner tomorrow to celebrate Veteran's Day, seeing that he's been fighting in Iraq for 4 years now. I thank my grandpa all of the brave men and women who have lost their lives, served in the armed forces and those who sacrificed everything so that we could have better lives. Thank You! hail hail

In memory of my Great Uncle Hywel (My Nain's brother) I shall be taking part in the two minutes silence at 11am tomorrow. I dont wear a poppy because I believe that you can honour people without "putting it all on show" but I don't disrespect anybody who honours the dead in that way

    dead

    Not you too???????

I was asked today why I don't wear one and the answer was just shrugged off. I just believe in remembering people in a quiet and dignified way and not because somebody dictates that you do so in a "national" manner

Don't get me wrong, if I hear "The Last Post" I blub my eyes out but I just find public displays of mourning a bit distasteful

I believe that the idea of the poppy as a symbol for Remembrance Day came from the following poem which is in itself a quite beautiful little piece of work

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
    We shall not sleep,
    though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

The poppy as a symbol has been going for a lot longer that the coloured ribbons but I suppose yes it is the same sort of thing

Everyone has a different way of looking at it. Some people go out of there way to wear the ribbons and knick knacks because they feel the need to show and feel it.

Some people like myself remember the day and have the appreciation for veterans, past soldiers, and the civilians that contributed just as much to the wars and conflicts but don't go out of the way to pick up a ribbon (I'll wear one if offered though).

It's a personal choice as with everything else in life but I'm glad you mentioned the civilians as I feel that they are often overlooked in these things
