Honestly, the butt is the last place I think to warm up by a fire.

For the holiday season...

According to superstition, you're supposed to save a bit of the Yule log that you burn in the fireplace, every year and burn it the next year.

That's not useless, that's religious. And the little bit is supposed to stay lit all year as a symbol that life continues on. Another tradition from the same religion is to have a wooden wheel at the top of a hill, light it up (fire), and roll it down hill in a way to symbolize the passing of Baldr and as a reminder of his eventual return after Ragnarök.

^^They added it to their hearths or something to that extent from what I remember. Same flame, different log over time I'm thinking. Much like they (supposidly) keep the Olympic torch lit.

Reminds something that is tradition here; the palms from Palm Sunday are usually brought to church some days before Carnival and burned down to use them as ashes in Ash Wednesday.

Presbyterian churches do that.

Crying Girl DVD Helps Men Feel Strong

It may not be The Crying Game but "Crying Girl" (Nakigao, in Japanese) from Amuse Soft Entertainment has its fair share of crying. In fact, it's almost ALL crying. One after another, 11 minor female celebs shed real tears as they recount some of the worst days of their lives.
The "11 stories of people crying in earnest", as the DVD's tag line states, include some that really don't seem so terrible but instead reflect the rigors of being an up & coming model in Japan's fiercely competitive "idol" culture:
Marika, who was yelled at by her manager.
Risa, who had been jilted by her boyfriend.
Nana, who saw a bad picture of herself in a magazine.
Shiho, who cried when her boyfriend said goodbye.
Mai, who cried "touching the loneliness of the city".
Yutaka, who has a friend with breast cancer who's engaged to marry.

If the Crying Girl DVD was being marketed in the Western World, it would certainly be aimed at women who can sympathize, empathize and ultimately feel catharsis through sharing the sad recollections of the 11 women on the DVD.

But that's not the case - Crying Girl, which will be available at Amazon Japan from March 26th, appears to be aimed at Japanese men.

This is a tricky concept, but it seems that men in Japan need to have their "conquering instinct" stoked up, and the way to do this is by watching beautiful women cry. Yep, in a nutshell: men feel stronger after experiencing the weakness of women. Try expressing that select philosophical nugget over here and you'll earn yourself a swift kick in the, er, nutshells.

But hey - Japan is a different culture and Crying Girl just underlines that fact.

Kangaroos run wild in France

November 12, 2003 - 8:35AM

It does not resemble any desert plain in outback Australia, but around 50 kangaroos which escaped a French animal park 30 years ago are happily living wild in a forest west of Paris.

The grey marsupials broke free from the Emance nature reserve in the Yvelines department and are now bounding around woods bordering a dozen villages in the neighbouring Eure-et-Loir department, Le Parisien daily reported.

"The kangaroos' presence in the forest didn't happen yesterday. They began making the woods their own after some people who tried to steal them released several of them," a park employee said.

Signs signalling their presence have been erected along roads bisecting the southern part of the huge Rambouillet forest.

"Kangaroos have been part of our daily life for 20 years," said Francoise Grangeon, mayor of the town of Emance.

Even the magazine of the town school is called the "Joking Kangaroo", Grangeon said.

One expert said the kangaroos survive on buds and leaves, and reproduce in the month of August.
