PostSubject: Games people play   Thu Aug 28, 2008 9:35 pm

Goths, more than other walks of life, seem to have a natural predilection for dressing up in "costumes". I was wondering if people take this a stage further and act out their fantasies either in organised role-play situations like D&D or various LARP groups or just by maintaining a fondness for "playing kids games" and if so, what kind of games do you play.

A couple of my own examples:

When I was about 14-17 my friend, the younger girls from next-door to him and I were still playing "Star Wars" (his choice) and "Dracula" (see, I had much better taste than him) and such like in secret when the other kids from school weren't looking and so couldn't deride us for our "immaturity".

I was recently walking through some woods on the way home from my doctor's, lost (as I very often am) in fantasy. I was imagining I was a knight guiding a lady or princess or somesuch through a orc / wolf / brigand infested forest. And thought wouldn't it be nice if I was "allowed" to dress up in a suitable costume and have a playmate to play this game with me.

  • Anyone else have thoughts like this?
  • Or actually do anything about it?
  • Or am I just too weird?

Every day I leave the house I am in costume. Every outfit is based around a persona or image or what not.

But proper role play. Depends if I am feeling submissive or dominant.

But in regard to what you've said, kinda if I am shopping or what ever I always play pretend its great fun. Especially if I am walking about on my own.

When I used to go running I would do a run for your life sprint that was always fun.

I don't dress up to live out a fantasy.

That is not to say that I don't play out scenarios in my mind...

What I was really getting at was the idea that as goths already like to play dress up, that might be an indicator of a richer fantasy life and the ability to engage in activities that others find too embarrassing to own up to.

I suppose the "extreme" end of what I'm "fishing for" is fully costumed (perhaps part of a LARP club or something) "play-acting".

I was wondering about the urge to externalise those scenarios into "childish" play situations.

I think even "they" go through scenarios in the minds but probably just "normal" things: "When she said that, I wish I said XXXXX instead of XXXXXXX". I was wondering about what kind of scenarios that people on this board play out, do they have a rich fantasy content quite divorced from "real life" and, more specifically, that urge towards play-acting.

I think that's the case for many of us.

In fact that's an interesting side to my second example because in the fantasy I was acting out in my head, not only was I playing a "game", I was also fantasising that I had someone to play the game with me.

This is the sort of thing that I was expecting to hear. It's an internalised and solitary kind of thing.

I wonder what it is that makes us give-up the more obvious, vocal, group play activities, and internalise them like this. Is it society, or some inherent aspect of being human?
