    Fashion gets its' Goth on

The idea that the majority of people should change their style and wardobe with every fashion 'season' still astounds me and as we approach my favourite time of the year, weather wise and fashion wise, Autumn collections become influenced by darker things and Summers' printed flowing dresses pale in comparison. Yes this is more a column for the girls but also raises the issue of the gothic style becoming popular as a 'look' alone.

Apparently A/W 2010 (Autumn/Winter for those who don't read Vogue) is focussing on military designs and 'glam goth'. Yes I am a follower of fashion, well style and design really, and regularly pore over glossy mags dreaming of the day when I too might sell my soul and purchase a eye-wateringly expensive Dior gown (in black obviously). So when the September issues hit the shops I know the time has come for all the pastels and floral frocks to disappear and the more sombre, darker side of fashion emerges. I was not prepared for such a serious focus on goth though.

In Style magazine is giving tips on how to 'do goth eye make-up without overdoing it' and Marie Claire says of the new catwalk shows 'Say hello to goth's sexy older sister - dark, dramatic, and with a hint of the Edwardian heroine, she played muse to a coven of designers.' Cue lots of emaciated models in black lace and latex leggings with cheekbones that could cut glass. Yawn. Apparently the popularity of things like Twilight and other glamourous vampire films/books/media is to blame. Sorry, is the 'influence'.

    More at the link.

    But isn't this over yet?

Seems like every year I find another one of these fashion trend things talking about goth.

Just wait until their fascination with us wanes hon and we can pick up loads of cheap goodies.

Mr Damnation (who loves goth girls very much) blames Anne Rice entirely

^^I agree. I remember a few years ago in my area the goth look was out and the hippy/ 80's clash arose. I was able to find fishnets and other goodies for pennies compared to what they were being sold at. I don't mind the trends coming in this direction because I know once it walks away in a few months I will be able to get my dream outfits for fractions of the cost.

^^ That's how I feel, too. I see 2 good things about Goth being currently trendy: It gets people less freaked out about black clothes/dramatic designs, and it becomes a lot easier for us to find things we like to wear.

Two bad points too, though: it waters down the Goth fashion aesthetic (not to say I'm a purist, not by a longshot), and it goes "out of fashion" as trends do: people visit the aesthetic, then throw it away when they're done, and look at us as though we're passe. Rolling Eyes Not to say we're not accustomed to disapproving glances. :/

I'm just dreading punk fashion having a massive revival - if that happens I'm completely buggered Laughing
