Lately I've been experiencing alot of stress realted to work, school, friends, etc. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on things I could do to keep myself from going off the deep end? What are some of the things you guys do to relieve stress?

Well, taking walks is always good... eating chocolate... I also find my dance classes to be stress relieving.

If all else fails, you could get some stress balls. It feels nice to squeeze something when angry, and if you 'accidentally' throw them at someone, they're not hard enough to actually hurt them tongue

I've had my eye on these for a while, but only because the faces are funny.

^^ Good ideas, Nsane -- I especially like the walking.

Things I do (long list -- I have plenty of anxiety to combat):

I walk on my lunch break. It helps me to get out and away from work while still being physically active; sort of walk the stress off. I'll even do a few laps around the galleries if I'm antsy and I can't head out.

Laugh. At a website, a joke, something your husband did, something you did.

Music: relaxing or upbeat at work (classical or jazz work for me), or something more spirited if you're walking outside.

A couple uninterrupted deep breaths: breathe in slow, hold for 5-7 seconds, breathe out 8-10 seconds.

Planning or doing things that *do* make you feel in control: cleaning out closets or getting rid of expired stuff in the fridge/pantry.

Being kind to a stranger; even a "good morning" can help someone else and you. It's a powerful thing to inject some good energy into someone's day. I helped someone on the bus yesterday without realizing it; long story short, he told me "It really helped to talk to you."

Above all, be kind to *you.* Treat your body well, get an extra hour's sleep, take time to do your nails, do a silly date with the hubby (Subway sandwiches in the park, or on your living room floor, etc.) Enjoy time on your own, too. Helps to do little things that remind you that you do matter.

Things will get better; you'll find something better. Hang in there. hug

I'd just stay home tongue
People bother me in general.
To be honest, I think music helps me. And talking about what bothers me helps.
I'm not good with stress so I need some pointers myself Smile

Another good stress reliever, switch to a Mac. Windows 7 has made my blood pressure go through the roof within the past 2-3 hours....

I wonder if Firefox would ever make their own operating system?

I throw/break things.

Probably not very productive but it helps at least temporarily. (plus I try to go for soft unbreakable things like pillows)

I find shouting racial slurs at my computer when it's not working correctly works well.

I didn't know that computers were a race of their own. :p

I listen to music or write very gory revenge plots.

Sex.
Smoking you-know-whatt. Can I say weed on this board?
Screaming/shouting whatever comes to mind.
Laying in bed and listening to music.

Working in the photo lab and guest service at Target is very stressful. Fortunately we have a supply closet that I can easily duck into when totally maddened.

There I engage in controlled breathing. I inhale to the count of three and exhale to the count of three- then repeat that at least ten times.

At home I use yoga.

And beyond that, the wiccan practice of grounding and centering.

And of course, on the less healthy end of things, a nice glass of wine at the end of a rough day.

The thing that helps me keep my calm the most is to just take a step back, breathe, and remind myself that no matter how overwhelming things may seem, it is not the end of the world, and life will go on regardless of the outcome of whatever situation I am in.

Meditation may help as well.

Sometimes, when I cannot get myself to do that, I rant to people, or drink herbal tea. St. John's Wort is especially good for this, as it raises serotonin levels in the brain, helping to stabilize your mood [as a side note, St. John's Wort messes with a lot of medications (anti-depressants and birth control are the two main meds that come to mind, but it screws with others as well) so be sure to look it up before taking it!] There are other herbs which I'll take sometimes as well, including valerian, chamomile, and catnip.

I'm still working on some of my methods because I'm still getting stress headaches when I don't even realize I'm stressed. But I will share what I have learned/ done with you all.

- Cigarette breaks. (I guess you could call them breathers since it takes you out of the situation for 5 minutes for those of you on the forum that don't smoke) I find leaving the scene then coming back to it after calming down helps.

-Music. Lots and lots of loud angry music. It works even better while speeding down the express way.

- Drinking hot coco/ tea/ favorite beverage

- Writing stories

-Thinking of revenge plots

-Coming up with something creative to do

- Sitting on belle Isle alone listening to the water and watching the busy cities in detroit and canada collide with their lives

- Reading a book

- Talking to friends or matt about what is wrong

- Eating something that will indulge your pleasure sensors in your taste buds

- A late night get away with friends or family (some thing spontaneous or casual)

-Cuddling

- Shopping trips

- Hot showers

- Restyling your look or hair

- Punching something

- Helping someone else out with their problems. Because even though it isn't about you, somehow helping someone else can be an internal therapy or revolution for you as well as helping them

^^ I like the sound of those. Especially shopping -- I've been wanting to go shopping with girl friends lately, but they all live far away. I wish I could go with the ladies here!

^^shopping with all of you would be such fun!

My stress relief: a good baseball bat and a dead tree.

or writing, driving for hours with no purpose or walking in the woods for hours with no purpose, which is the less violent way of dealing with it.

Been a bit stressed myself lately.

My stress busters -

1. Taking the car up to 120mph on the motorway (dont tell the plods I do this and I only do this when I'm on my own)
2. Gardening - I highly recommend this as you are creating a thing of lasting beauty
3. Pampering myself - facepacks, nail piercings, pedicures, long hot scented baths with a glass of wine and a good book
4. Talking to Himself and friends about how I feel
5. Giving and receiving great big huge squishy hugs
6. Dying my hair
7. Putting myself into the shoes of other people and realising that I actually have a bloody great life.

Dude, I got caught doing 80 (and got a $250 ticket), and this wasn't on an overly populated road.
