'It's time to put an end to ham sandwiches'

Parents should not give their children ham sandwiches in their packed lunches, a charity has warned.
Youngsters need to get into the habit of avoiding processed meats like ham, salami, hot dogs and bacon, it said.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), there is "convincing evidence" that eating processed meat increases the risk of bowel cancer.
While there is no specific research on eating the meats in childhood, the charity said the evidence in adults was too strong to ignore.

Children should therefore adopt a healthy eating pattern from the age of five and avoid processed meat, it said.

Marni Craze, children's education manager for the WCRF, added: "If children have processed meat in their lunch every day then over the course of a school year they will be eating quite a lot of it.

"It is better if children learn to view processed meat as an occasional treat if it is eaten at all."

The WCRF is also urging parents to avoid lunchbox fillers that are high in fat and calories.

Foods such as sugary drinks can cause weight gain, and obesity in adulthood is linked to cancer, it said.

The charity warned that parents may be misled by packaging or where a product appears on a supermarket shelf or website.


It makes me sad when things like this get written somewhere.Based on annecdotal science that might not even be right someone goes off half cocked trying to protect the public.

But ham sandwiches are soo good....

Personally I don't like sandwiches. But I do like salami and bacon. This is total bull. If I want to eat something I'm foing to do it. This is just like the whole rasing taxes on pop thing. How do people get away with making all these accusations? These people need to back off and let others live their lives.

True story:
On Saturday, I run into an old friend in a bar. She's a burlesque dancer/freak show performer (her bit involves being double jointed, and we look a lot alike, so i fill in for her sometimes).
Her: "I'm starving- I can't perform like this- God I wish someone had some food!"
Me: "Want half a ham and cheese sandwich?"
Her, looking confused: "Do you... have one one you?"
I dig in my purse: "Right here- oh, with mustard packets. I'm trying to go fully veg, but damnit, i wanted a ham and cheese sandwich earlier!"
In gratitude, she buys me two beers.

Thus lunchroom trade is alive in well in my favorite bar, and all the haters can... I dunno, get colon cancer ironically anyway?

Noooooooooooo! I love ham! I exist on the bloody stuff because the wafer thin ham has very few calories.
