I just found this teeny article on an interview with Jillian Venters. And I'm very interested in what the rest of you think about it. I haven't read her "Gothic Charm School" book as yet.

Author wrote the handbook on being Goth

There are somethings I don't quite agree on, but who am I. Very Happy

    Um this is one...

"Frequently if you just talk to parents and say, "These are the things I like and what questions can I answer for you?" parents tend to be OK with it."

I truly hate to knock down anyones "Go forth without fear" ... but not all parents tend to be ok with it. Perhaps I'm still living in the "darkages" but not every coming out goes so smoothly. Just'a words up to have that in mind, intead of reading that and maybe thinking it's gonna be a piece of cake. Not everyone or everyone's parents are going to thinks it's ok to have Halloween cake when the holiday is over for most of society. pumpkindead bat heart

    I like Jillian Vinters,but I always did.
I agree not every parent is going to be thrilled that their child is diffrent. But most people's parents have some inkling that their child is not the same.
Honestly though parents really should be happy that their child feels like they can be themselves, but that's not always the case.
If that is something that anyone hasto deal with then no matter what your age is I feel bad for them.Their parents might never accept them for who and what they are,and that's a terrible thing. Not accepting your child for who and what they are is not the failing of the child,it is the failing of the parent, hopefully the child will know and understand that.

I read the book earlier this week. I thought it was ok. The author makes alot of valid points, but overall I thought the book was more of an introductory Goth 101 than a practical guide for those of us who've been invloved in this "subculture" for a while.

Cyn, I agree with you 100%. Even the most supportive and loving of parents will be concerned with their teen's newly acquired "Gothness". I gave my mom quite a scare with my all black, metal, spiders and bats when I was in high school. Now that I'm an adult, she's super cool with my "creepiness". She now knows to get me a Carvel Halloween ice cream cake for my birthday, which falls the week before Halloween. grin

I just finished reading it actually i would it pretty good i felt however in some ways it seemed more for the new comer or possibly baby bats or a younger audience. I did find a few times I actually laughed out loud. there were some very good points and some food for thought however I felt most of the book was common sense but then sadly most people dont posess common sense to begin with. I've recommended it never the less to a few people and hopefuly they will check it out.
